1. Robbery at residential parties
Within the past week, there have been reports of a rather new crime wave affecting mostly residential areas (at least three cases reported over the weekend). Criminals took advantage of security lapses and attacked residential areas where parties or some form of functions were being held within Karen and Lavington. The criminals possibly with some inside information drove in as part of the visitors completely unnoticed and mingled with others; once they were in the home and felt the quorum was big enough for looting, they produced their AK 47 Arsenal and started robbing every body at gun point and any resistance was met with very serious injuries.
This is new trend of robbery and hence the need to reassess our security especially when we have to hold parties or any other functions within our residences or within the institutions.
Important lessons learnt;
a. There was no coordination between the home owners and their security teams – the security staff were never given any specific names of the expected visitors
b. Arrangements to have additional security to cater for a large function were not in place
c. The home owners ignored to seek any advice from their security service providers on how to secure the function.
Based on the above, it is very important when arranging any party/function; you must prepare a detailed list of expected visitors and hand it over to your security guards with specific instructions not to allow anybody not on the list unless you are contacted.
2. Other criminal incidents
Several other crimes to include road side robberies, robberies in bars and even careless killings are being reported and all are now being associated with Mungiki.Whether Mungiki or not, it is important that we take precautions to avoid falling victims easily. The current trend show an indication of all related crimes happening at night, hence our first precaution would be to avoid late night movements as much as possible. It is also important for us to asses the kind of pubs we frequent especially in Eastlands.I would advise that for the time being we resort to less crowded pubs which might be expensive but safe.
